In the Garden
On my way home from lunch this afternoon my mind wandered back to something I spoke about after Christmas. I was standing in the garden of Mountain Home Methodist Church, next to the statue of Christ at Gethsemane. I remember how peaceful I felt there, always with soft snow falling on my face. Exactly where I needed to be, where I was called to be. I wondered about how it was I felt this peace in the moment before such turmoil could begin, feeling in the right place at the right time. My reflection took me back to Gethsemane, back to those moments just before the drama leading to the crucifixion. The right place, at the right time. When you read the story you become aware of all of the miracles that took place in those moments. An ear sliced and an ear healed, friends woken by the drama only to be told that the drama was due, that it was time. They were teaching moments when each of the players learned something more about themselves.

It makes me wonder, is it possible to not be in the right place at the right time? Perhaps knowing that you are exactly where you need to be allows you to feel that peace, but maybe that peace comes from knowing that it’s ok to be exactly where you are…that you don’t need to be anywhere else. You can only be in the right place at the right time; you can never be in the wrong place at the wrong time. (Hey, that’s a double negative, so even if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time the rules of grammar and mathematics tell you that the negative becomes a positive…and you must be exactly where you need to be.)
Isn’t that what is meant by peace? Knowing where you are and why you are there…because you are answering spirit’s call. (Even when all of the other details are vague and unclear.) Knowing you are exactly where you chose to be…and you can choose again.
